Thoughtful Consumption

Consumption happens. This is especially true in the fashion industry as there is often a relentless push toward “newness”. Brands hurriedly produce styles only to toss them aside soon after in favor of the next new style.

At Leatherology, we have an entirely different design ethos. We focus on timeless pieces that are wearable today, tomorrow, and for years to come. We intentionally design to discourage the constant churn of fast fashion.

What does it mean when we say “thoughtful consumption?”

We like the phrase “thoughtful consumption” because it’s honest and reflective. As a brand, it is our responsibility to take a more thoughtful approach to design and production to minimize our footprint.

We source only the highest quality materials to ensure durability. Materials like our full-grain leather and organic cotton canvas can sustain long-term wear, eliminating the need to replace them seasonally.

However, it is not just about how long something lasts, but how it’s made. We asked ourselves, how can we make leather production more sustainable and environmentally conscious? How do we improve upon a centuries-old process? The short answer is through thoughtful consumption.

How do we become more thoughtful?

We embed thoughtfulness into each step of the product lifecycle:

  • The leather used in our production is a byproduct, meaning it is from animals already being consumed for meat, not from animals specially raised for their skin. Instead of wasting the skins, this byproduct is used to create long lasting accessories.
  • We are making strides to work with only LWG certified leather tanneries, a certification that is the industry standard-bearer for best-in-class and sustainability practices in leather tanning.
  • Our new canvas collection is made from GOTS and OCS certified 100% organic heavy duty cotton canvas.
  • We intentionally offer a broad assortment of large and small leather goods in continuing colorways to improve our leather utilization, minimizing leather waste.
  • We run a state-of-the-art production facility that uses computerized leather cutting, allowing us to cut panels edge to edge.
  • Because we are a direct to consumer brand with an emphasis on timeless styles, we do not run on the traditional fashion calendar, which allows us to optimize our transport logistics.

These are just a few of the steps we are taking to become a more conscious and responsible company. In the months ahead, we’re excited to dig deeper into each one and provide you more transparency on how we operate as a business.

Our commitment

Leatherology began as a desire to create accessibly priced, beautifully designed accessories that are timeless, complete, and lasting. We cannot truly realize this goal without being more intentional about every part of our process - from design, sourcing and production to packaging, shipping and fulfillment.

This is not a sprint. This is a marathon. And we are committed to doing better while we create accessories that will continue to elevate the everyday for years to come.
