What is RFID?

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification, and it is commonly used in chips that are then inserted into credit cards and scannable IDs. This allows for quick scanning and identification.

There are three different frequencies for RFID: low, high, and ultra-high. Low frequency RFID chips are sometimes used for work IDs and have a shorter read distance (think a foot or less). Our lining provides protection across high and ultra-high frequency chips (10MHz to 3000MHz), which are used for credit cards, government-issued IDs, and passports.

No — not on its own. Leather is not a barrier to radio frequencies, and a plain leather wallet offers no protection against scanning. What blocks RFID is a conductive layer. Every wallet in this collection is lined with a metallic fabric that shields high and ultra-high frequency chips from 10MHz to 3000MHz, which covers credit cards, government-issued IDs, and passports.

 An RFID wallet is a wallet built with a lining that blocks the radio signal used to read the chip in your cards. Without that lining, a card can be read by a scanner held nearby. With it, the signal doesn't reach the chip. From the outside, an RFID wallet looks like any other wallet — the difference is entirely in the lining.

Yes, provided the lining covers the right frequency range. RFID chips operate at different frequencies. Low frequency chips, often used for work IDs, have a read distance of a foot or less. High and ultra-high frequency chips — the ones in credit cards, passports, and government-issued IDs — can be read from further away. Our lining covers 10MHz to 3000MHz, which spans both.

Keep them in a wallet with a conductive lining. That's the whole mechanism — the lining interrupts the signal between a scanner and the chip in your card. Individual card sleeves work too, but a lined wallet protects everything you carry at once, and it doesn't depend on remembering to slide each card back into place.

Look for a small symbol on the face or the back of the card: four curved lines, like a sideways wifi icon. If your card taps to pay, it has one. Most passports issued in the last fifteen years contain a chip as well, marked with the same symbol on the cover.
