Monogrammed Leather Goods & Personalization

These three words get used interchangeably, and they shouldn't be. They describe three different things happening to the leather.

• Debossing presses in. A heated die pushes the design down into the surface, compressing the fibers and leaving a recessed impression. This is what we do. The mark sits below the plane of the leather, which is why it deepens and softens with wear rather than rubbing off.
• Embossing raises up. The same idea in reverse — the design is pushed out from behind so it stands proud of the surface. You'll see it most often in the pebbled or textured patterns stamped across a whole panel of leather.
• Engraving cuts away. A blade or laser removes material to form the mark. It's precise, but it breaks the surface of the hide, which is why we don't use it on full-grain leather that we want to age well.

If you've been searching for leather engraving or embossed initials, debossing is almost certainly what you have in mind — it's the recessed, hand-pressed monogram you see on a good wallet.

One more distinction worth making: a monogram isn't the same as initials. Initials run in sequence, the way they appear in a name. A monogram is a designed arrangement — letters sized, ordered, and often interlocked to work as a single mark. More on that below.

A note on convention. Traditionally, monograms for women place the surname initial in the center at a larger size, with the first and middle initials flanking it. Monograms for men more often run first-middle-last in sequence at a uniform size. These are conventions, not rules — we'll set your initials in whatever order you enter them, so the choice stays yours.

Almost everything we make can be personalized, but not every method works on every piece — Trapunto needs a panel large enough to quilt, and hand paint needs a smooth surface to hold the layers. Here's what's available where.

Canvas, too. Our organic canvas pieces take a deboss just as well as full-grain leather does — the leather trim carries the impression, so a canvas tote or weekender can be monogrammed exactly the way a leather one is.

Travelling with it. Monogrammed luggage tags and passport holders are the obvious pair, but the case for initials is strongest on the bag itself — a personalized weekender or travel bag is the one piece of luggage that never gets picked up by mistake.

4. We finish it by hand. Your piece is personalized to order by our team and ships once it's complete. Timing is shown at checkout.

Our deboss impressions are set with heat and pressure that compress the leather's fibers rather than scoring the surface, so the mark deepens as the piece develops its patina instead of wearing away. Hand-painted initials are built in thin layers and sealed, which lets them flex with the leather rather than cracking across it. Trapunto lettering is stitched through the panel, making it structural — it can't lift or peel because it isn't sitting on top of anything.
