About Italian Leather

Our Italian leather items are marked with the Italian Leather Seal on Item Information Pages Italian Leather

Italian Leather can cost up to six times more than the cost of lower quality Leather. This is due to the tanning process & quality of raw hides. The Italian tanners are actually craftsman practicing a tanning process that has been passed down from generation to generation. They truly hand craft the leather using the best raw hides possible.

Italian Leather

The challenge is to maintain the beauty of hide throughout the tanning process. Therefore the Italian hides are usually not heavily coated or pigmented. As a result, the leather will have a beautiful hand feel but may see a small blemish or scar. Unless it’s an exotic print, the surface is not uniform to maintain the integrity of the hide allowing it to exhibit a very natural surface giving the leather character. These leathers will grow more beautiful over time and develop a nice, rich patina providing years of enjoyment.

Examples of leathers that exude this quality include our favorite Terra Collection available in Saddle Brown (shown below), Rustic Red & Midnight Black and Vero Collection available in Ebony & Brownstone.

If you are looking for something with a stylish flair in vivid colors, don’t despair. All of our fashion & exotic leather types are Italian Leathers. While the ‘naturalness’ is sometimes lost, the benefits of Italian Leather still exist. You will find these leather types to be a great addition to any wardrobe & age gracefully over time.

You will find Leatherology offers up to (3) price points for our styles. While the lowest price point reflects good Grade A & B quality leather hides, you will find the price point is dependent on the quality and cost of the leather. Please note all of our products are constructed with equally superior standards of craftsmanship, only the material changes causing a fluctuation in the price. We do not sell products constructed with low quality or bonded leather.

What is poor quality leather? Heavily scarred & blemished hides are used for mass production. After the surface is worn down, to remove scars and scratches, the surface is heavily painted with pigment and coated with chemicals. The more problems with a hide, the more pigment & coating used – also the lower the cost. The result is an unnatural product with a tendency to crack and will not develop the nice patina over time.
